Community Stories - South Strand Helping Hand
Welcome to the Community Stories page of South Strand Helping Hand. Here we showcase the heartwarming stories of individuals and families who have been uplifted during difficult times through our food distribution and community outreach programs.
*When K.D. came in for the first time for assistance, she was nervous and not sure what to expect. Her family had come upon a very difficult time in their life. K. D's husband had a very serious accident leaving him unable to work and in need of 24-hour care. KD had to stop working to care for her husband 24/7, as well as taking care of two young children. Our volunteers were able to comfort her and assist her family with much needed food, referrals and lots of love and understanding. KD's husband has recovered, she has studied hard, worked hard and is now an extremely successful leader in our community. Her children are on their way to success as well. KD keeps in touch and is a dedicated supporter and now a very close friend to many at our office. She is an example of strength, courage and love.
*L.C. came to our office as a young child of a family in need of assistance with food insecurities. Over the years L.C. formed friendships with the volunteers and wanted to give back when she entered High School. She hosted food drives at local schools as well as key person to host informational assemblies at community schools to educate other students on food insecurities. She volunteered at our location for years before heading off to college. She is a friend to all the volunteers at Helping Hand to this day. L.C. is now a successful Doctor in the Low Country and very involved in volunteer events in the area. We are proud of our community members that never give up and reach for the stars. We are very proud of L.C.
*There are many senior citizens in our service area that live on Social Security. Even thou they are very good about budgeting, the combination of Covid, increased prices and solitude caused different needs for this group. Our volunteers worked together to check in on our seniors in need, have wonderful conversations and learned so much of the history of S.C. while doing so. We love our seniors.
**If our agency has helped you and you would like to share your story, please reach out to our office and ask for Beth.
